July 2009 Readings

July 30, 2009, Thursday St. Peter Chrysologus, Obispo

Read: Ex 40:16-21, 34-38 Mt 13:47-53

Opening Prayer

"The kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth." (Mt. 13:47-50)

Man has perfected his ability to be prepared. Because of this, we enjoy progress.

Yet it seems odd that our interest and investment in our environment, our future and our progress, seem focused solely on the temporal (global warming, national security, the economy and health care, etc). The way most of us act, the material world and our stake in it is infinitely more important than eternity. But our eternal future is where we should be focusing our preparations.

Our life on Earth is a life that is only a life in anticipation for the real life to come. Much as a caterpillar lives only to prepare itself for its complete transformation into a butterfly, so is our existence. Our life on Earth is to prepare us for an eternity with God.

Jesus warns us that true provisions must be made for our eternal life. There will come a time when we will have to give an account to God for our life and our show our preparedness for life eternal.

Will we prove ready or lacking?
