July 24, 2009, Friday Read: Ex. 20:1-17 Mt. 13:18-23 "The seed along the path is the man who hears the message about God’s reign without understanding it. The evil one approaches him to steal away what was sown in his mind." (Mt. 13:19)St. Paul said, "How beautiful are the feet of those who announce the good news! But not all have believed the gospel. Isaiah asks, ‘Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?’ Faith, then, comes through, and what is heard is the message of Christ." (Rom. 10:15-17)Sometimes we find it surprising when we encounter strong negative reactions when inviting others to come to some church function, or when we try to discuss something about the Lord with them. Sometimes we encounter this negativity in people we highly esteem as good and pious people. This is when we must remember that Jesus warned us that there are those "who hear the message about God’s reign without understanding it" and that they are like "the seed along the path."It is simply not enough to have been baptized and to live with a mediocre attitude about the Kingdom and still think that we have a right to that same Kingdom. Our faith grows when we become interested in the things of God. It grows because of what we learn when it is in accord with our Church’s teachings, and it grows because of our efforts to come closer to Him. It also grows because knowledge, when reflected upon and integrated with our lives, helps us to appreciate that which we have received from God.Reflection and commentary Psalm 97:11 "Light dawns for the just; gladness, for the honest of heart." |
