Read: Ex 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20 Mt. 13: 10-17

Opening Prayer

"When the disciples got near him, they asked him, ‘Why do you speak to them in parables?’" (Mt. 13:10)

It would be really nice that in those crucial and difficult moments, when making decisions, that "right direction" would have clear and discernible signs as to the best way for us to go. We want things to be like this so that we would not have to suffer through doubts once we make a decision. We look but do not see... we listen but do not understand.

"‘Sluggish indeed is this people’s heart. They have scarcely heard with their ears and firmly closed their eyes...’ But blest are your eyes because they see and blest are your ears because they hear." (15-16)

Jesus continues to act in the same way. To Jesus' disciples who loved and followed Him, and were open to receive His instructions, the Lord spoke to them clearly, simply and plainly.

We contrast that with the others, many of whom were against Jesus -- in the camp of His enemies -- He spoke very differently, and with great care.

Jesus hid no secrets from His disciples. "I no longer speak to you as slaves, for a slave does not know what his master is about. Instead, I call you friends, since I have made known to you all that I heard from my Father." (Jn. 15:15)

Only when we go before the Lord Jesus with an open mind and an open heart -- and a willingness to do that which He asks of us -- will come the help and guidance we so desperately seek. "To the man who has, more will be given until he grows rich."

Reflection and commentary

Psalm 31: "How great is your goodness, Lord, stored up for those who fear you."
