July 22, 2009, Wednesday St. Mary Magdalene Read: Ex 16:1-5, 9-15 Jn. 20:1-2,11-18 "Woman," they asked her, "why are you weeping?" She answered them, "Because the Lord has been taken away, and I do not know where they have put him." She had no sooner said this than she turned around and caught sight of Jesus standing there. But she did not know him. "Woman," he asked her, "why are you weeping? Who is it you are looking for?" She supposed he was the gardener, so she said, "Sir, if you are the one who carried him off, tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned to him and said, "Teacher. (Jn.20:13-16)Mary Magdalene had a reason to look for the Master’s body. She had a great stake in His ministry and a share in His passion and death. Magdalene was present at the foot of the cross and watched the Lord die. And with His death, she watched her share in the hope of all hopes die. You see, Mary Magdalene was lost. She was "possessed" by demonic spirits and steeped in sin. And when she met the Master, and came to listen to His words, she truly found a new life. She became a disciple of the Lord. Mary was saved from a life of internal death and personal destruction and given a divine way of life and, more importantly, a renewed vision, purpose, and profound gratitude. Not only did Mary receive a new life from Master at her conversion to God, but she received eternal life from the Lord in His Resurrection -- and the responsibility to proclaim it. St. Mary Magdalene, d. 1st. c.; healed of possessions and a sinful life; disciple of Jesus and present at his crucifixion, the first to witness to the risen Lord. |
