July 18, 2009, Saturday Read: Ex. 12:37-42 Mt. 12:14-21
Opening Prayer Jesus once said, "Nobody sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak..." (Mt. 9:16) He said this when the Pharisees began criticizing His disciples for not fasting, as the Pharisees themselves did, or even as the disciples of John the Baptist did, according to the traditions of Israel. Jesus used the opportunity to teach them that the way in which He was instructing them to relate to God and neighbor did not include putting "new ways" on the ancient traditions of the people. He would point out a distinct way. "Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem." (Jn. 4:21)But the Jews were not about to change what had been an integral part of their national identity -- The Law of Moses and the traditions of their fathers. Even though Jesus showed evidence of His divine power through miracles, the Jewish leadership preferred to make plans to kill him. Most of us do not seek to do the will of God in humility and sincerity. Most of us prefer to use our limited understanding of the world instead, often claiming that our viewpoint is the same as Almighty God’s.
