July 15, 2009, Wednesday St. Bonaventure Read: Ex. 3:1-6, 9-12 Mt. 11:25-27 Jesus said: "Father, Lord of heaven and earth, to you I offer praise; for what you have hidden from the learned and the clever you have revealed to the merest children. Father, it is true. You have graciously willed it so." (Mt. 11:25-26)The simple people are the humble people. We usually encounter such people among the poorly educated or those with fewer economic possibilities. It is easier to find the humble or simple before the Lord among those who have fewer ‘worldly’ possibilities than it is to find them among those encumbered by science, riches or power. Of course, there are always exceptions -- some of them have been heroic ones. The arrogant may know that God’s love exists, but they do not allow themselves to come to know or feel the love (that special relationship) that God shows to His people. There is nothing more important to the human spirit than love (to be served, included, needed and worthwhile). Jesus taught us that true love (the greatest love) is a sacrificial love. All good things come from true love. And, conversely, terrible things are a product of hate. We must strive to make our love pure and strong through sacrifice and humility, and thus imitate the Lord’s love for our human family. We hope, as the greatest of all hopes, that the Lord will make us worthy to give us His true love. Reflection and commentary Psalm 94:4 "How long will they mouth haughty speeches, go on boasting, all these evildoers?"St. Bonaventure , d. 1274; O.F.M. Minister General for 17 years; Cardinal bishop of Albano; authored biblical commentaries and many ascetical and spiritual treaties, the "Seraphic doctor." |
