July 14, 2009, Tuesday Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha

Read: Ex 2:1-15 Mt. 11: 20-24

Opening Prayer

"He began to reproach the towns where most of his miracles had been worked, with their failure to reform." (Mt. 11:20)

Many have become accustomed to living a kind of cheap and shoddy Catholicism — one that will do nothing for us when we have to account for ourselves before the Lord.

Many of us think we are ‘just’ and ‘good’ because we don’t commit "really big sins," (I don’t kill, I don’t rob, I don’t get into anybody’s business, I don't hurt anybody...) as if killing and robbing or being a busybody were the only things that put us in opposition to the holy will of God!

The commandment of the Lord is: "‘You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind.’ and "...You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’" There is no possible way we could think that these commandments are satisfied just by not killing, or robbing, or...

The person who believes himself ‘just’ without showing sincere works, works that show true love for God and neighbor, lives a very misguided life. That person has not had a true conversion of heart to God.

"What good is it to profess faith without showing works? Such faith has no power to save you... Faith without deeds is dead." (Jms 2: 14-19)

"It will go easier for Tyre and Sidon than for you on the day of judgment." (Mt. 20, 22)

Reflection and commentary

Psalm 22:12 "Do not stay far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to help." Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha, d. 1680 at Caughnawaga, Quebec, at age 24; led a life of great austerity and love in spite of ridicule and abuse; called "Lily of the Mahawks"; first native American to be declared "blessed."
