July 1, 2009, Wednesday Read: Gn. 21:5,8-20 Mt. 8:28-34 "Why meddle with us, Son of God? Have you come to torture us before the appointed time?" (Mt. 8:29) For many people today, Jesus and His Church are considered some kind of ‘spoilsport.’ They think that Jesus has no right to invade their ‘privacy,’ interfere with their pleasure or stand in the way of their convenience. They claim that neither Jesus nor His Church has a right to urge adherence to natural law or a proper use of this world’s goods, lent to us by God Himself. They say that neither Jesus nor His Church may tell them what to do with their capability to transmit life itself. For pleasure and personal gain, we are to be free sexually, free to use the power of procreation, love and commitment how ever we want to. Artificial contraception is a right; abortion is a right to self-determination. The human child growing inside the womb is simply "tissue." In our day, there are still many people possessed by demons like those of Gadara that shout: "Don’t meddle with us, Jesus, Son of GOD. Have you come to torture us?" The Devil enjoys offering us empty pleasures, driving asunder our equilibrium and our delicate moral order before God. Satan offers personal confusion and indulgent selfish behavior in place of happiness. And, sadly, so many of us buy it -- "hook, line and sinker." Reflection and commentary Psalm104:24 "How varied are your works, LORD! In wisdom you have wrought them all; the earth is full of your creatures." |
