Dn. 1: 1-6, 8-20 Lk. 21: 1-4 “This
poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made
offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her
whole livelihood.” (Lk. 21:3-4) Sacrificial
giving (tithing) is something we Catholics are not accustomed to hearing
about. Our Protestant neighbors are much better at stressing this aspect of a
profound religious commitment, but it is no less important for us than it is
for them. Frankly, most of us have failed in our obligation to give first
fruits to the Lord. Most
of us give a minimal amount, some token to our parish church. How much
do you make in salary? How much is your tithe, your return to God? A dollar in the collection basket? A five
dollar bill? Some loose change? “In
the course of time Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the
soil, while Abel, for his part, brought one of the best firstlings of his
flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering.” (Gn.
4:3-4) We
put our money where our heart is, yet when it comes to our expression of love
for Jesus or His Church, we “dry up” in the wallet. Some say the Church ‘is
so rich' trying to justify their lack of generosity. “Judas
the Iscariot said this not because he cared about the poor but because he...
used to steal the contributions.” (Jn. 12:6) Churches,
chalices, artworks, etc. are to raise the senses to God, and are owned by you,
the church. Think about where your treasure lies, for there you will find your
heart. Reflection and
commentary Psalm
66:13 “I will bring holocausts to your house; to you I will fulfill my
vows.” |
